About The Designer

In my last position in UCD Students Union I was responsible for designing and maintaining an extremely popular website at UCDSU.net. This entailed responsiblility for graphic design work such as creating a new logo to brand both the union and the site with a consistent identity which it previously lacked.

I was also responsible designing campaign based information posters and laying out union publications. I was also resposnible for submitting them to printers using software such as Photoshop, Quark and In design on this year long contract. This job entailed starting from scratch in both the aesthetic presentation of the union, as well as more importantly creating a major communication infrastructure where none existed before, and then of course all of this needed to be promoted intensively on campus.

A major aspect of this job involved working as part of team and engaging in a rapid turnover of briefs, as well as consulting with representatives over the best way to carry out campaigns. I was also involved in the organization of major on-campus events like the Freshers Ball, The Democracy Now Campaign, various gigs and fundraisers, as well as engaging in media monitoring. As the job finished, I also had to seek a successor through an interview process and train them into the position.

The Get Up Stand Up Campaign Posters And Leafletts

On this voluntary commission I was responsible for conveying a number of very simple but old ideas through posters. The basic idea of this campaign was to encourage trade union membership among young, people in precarious and temporary work. Graphically to do this required breaking away from old stereotypical left wing imagery and juxtaposing modern representations of work flexibility alongside the old idea that workers and bosses have nothing in common.

I also had to design an information flier for the campaign in a similar vein which can be downloaded here through Indymedia.

Indymedia Flier

The fliers were designed to be an A5 back and front downloadable file, you can view the one on writing the news and the other on Sharing Images through Indymedia.

The website launch was one of the biggest aspects of my brief, the above poster was used to convey the idea of open publishing and the community nature of the site. The site which resides at http://www.ucdsu.net has proven to be very popular as a community based forum for students in UCD.
